In response to a question raised by Pakistan Muslim League-Functional Senator Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that since the start of the year, the capital police have registered 2,251 cases of murder, robbery, theft and other crimes.

Cases related to rape and kidnappings were, however, not included in the list shared by the interior minister. Answering a separate question, the minister said that 90 rape cases were registered in Islamabad Capital Territory during the last five years, with only one person convicted so far. According to the minister, a total of 119 murder cases were registered in different police stations of the capital from January 1 to October 15.

In 2013, 143 murder cases were registered by the capital police while 123 cases were registered in 2012.

Similarly, 304 burglary cases, 378 robbery, 12 car-snatching, 33 motorcycle-snatching, 516 car theft, 383 motorcycle theft and 506 general theft cases were reported in the capital.

A police official, requesting not to be named, said that the overall performance of the police had been poort.

Islamabad Police Spokesperson Naeem Ahmed linked the high crime rate to the federal capital’s growing population.

He claimed that 10,000 policemen were not enough to secure the city. He further claimed that 60,000 suspects were arrested by the police in the last 10 months and were being tried in different courts.
