1st Test: Shakib’s six-for inspires Bangladesh
Zimbabwe bundled out for 240 as spinners claim nine
KARACHI:
An inspiring bowling performance by Shakibal Hasan, who ended with figures of 6-59 on his return into the side from suspension, helped Bangladesh dismiss Zimbabwe for 240 in the first innings of their first Test at Dhaka.
The Zimbabweans were off to a poor start when Vusi Sibanda edged Shahadat Hossain to the keeper in the first over of the match.
However, from then on it was all about the Bengali spinners, who accounted for the other nine wickets as 19-year-old Jubair Hossain, who has only two first class matches under his belt, took two wickets on his debut to go with Shakib’s six.
The spinners kept making regular inroads as several of the batsmen made starts, but failed to capitalise on them, throwing away their wickets to poor shot selections.
Sikandar Raza top-scored for Zimbabwe with 51 but was removed thanks to the softest of dismissals as he simply lofted it straight into short cover’s grateful arms.
Hamilton Masakadza, Brendan Taylor, Elton Chigumbura and Craig Ervine all perished due to rash or poor shots despite having spent time in the middle and getting their eye in.
In reply, Bangladesh ended the day on 27-1 as Tamim Iqbal was dismissed by a peach of a delivery from Tinashe Panyangara for five.
However, Shamsur Rahman and Mominul Haque then stood firm to see off the final seven over of the day’s play to put Bangladesh in a strong position to finally put an end to a winless streak that stretches back to April 2013, when they defeated the same opponents in Harare.
