Joint raids: Two kidnapped persons including child recovered

Around a dozen suspects were also arrested in separate raids.

KARACHI:

The Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), with the help of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and Rangers, claimed to have recovered two abductees from the captivity of the kidnappers during two raids conducted in separate parts of the metropolis.

Eight-year-old Tufail was kidnapped from Hijrat Colony when he was on the way to a religious seminary near his house on Tuesday. Following the incident, the family of the boy received a call from the kidnappers who demanded Rs500,000 for the child's release. The family registered a complaint with the CPLC, upon which officials of both the CPLC and SIU acted.

They traced the kidnappers' hideout and conducted a raid on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in Quaidabad, Landhi. The officials recovered the abductee and also arrested a kidnapper after an exchange of fire. He was later identified as Qari Shaukat.

In another joint raid conducted by the CPLC, Rangers and police on Wednesday noon, another man was recovered from the captivity of kidnappers. The abducted businessman, Yousuf, was kidnapped during a robbery at his house located in Bahadurabad on September 15.

Police officials said that the kidnappers had demanded Rs50 million for the safe release of the abductee. They conducted a raid at the abductors' hideout but could not arrest any culprit. The kidnappers had fled while leaving the abductee behind at an empty house located near Northern Bypass. Police officials said that Yousuf was later found tied with chains.

"Both the abductees were recovered in two successful joint raids within 24 hours," said CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy. "Interestingly, both were recovered safely and without paying a single penny to the kidnappers for their release."

Meanwhile, a score of traders and shopkeepers of Zaibunnisa Street, Saddar, staged a protest against the law enforcement agencies failure to recover an abducted trader. Gulzar was kidnapped about 45 days ago. Protesters claimed that despite the passage of more than 45 days, the law enforcement agencies failed to recover him. They also shouted slogans against them and demanded the immediate recovery of their fellow worker.

Other raids

Earlier, Rangers Special Task Force conducted a targeted raid in Defence and arrested two alleged criminals. Among them was an extortionist identified as Shaheryar Ahmed. According to a Rangers spokesperson, the raid was conducted on a complaint. The suspects have been shifted to an undisclosed location for further interrogation, he added.

Separately, Rangers conducted an intelligence-driven raid in Landhi.
