There is a shortfall of 2,800-to-5,500MW depending on seasonal demand, said minister

ISLAMABAD:

The Senate was informed that 16 power projects with an aggregate capacity of 2,685 megawatts (MW) are currently in different stages of completion.  Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali told the House that there are another nine long-term projects envisaging generation of 19,951MW of electricity. He said there is a shortfall of 2,800-to-5,500MW depending on seasonal demand.

Responding to another question, he said the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) is making a payment of Rs6 billion annually to K-P since 1991 as royalty on profit from hydel power stations located in the province.

However, Wapda could not make full payments during financial years 2011-12 and 2012-13 due to an inadequate release of funds, he said. During current financial year, Wapda has made payment of Rs2.1 billion  to K-P.
