Defence ties: Pak-Russia joint naval exercise ends

Pakistan and Russia navies are carrying out their bit in advancing the bilateral relations between the two countries

KARACHI:

The navies of Pakistan and Russia are carrying out their bit in advancing the bilateral relations between the two countries, said Commander Pakistan Fleet Vice Admiral Z M Abbasi on Monday, while marking the end of a week-long joint exercise with Russian ships.

Abbasi, flanked by Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service (FDCS) Director Victor Ivanov, was briefing newsmen regarding the joint naval exercise conducted with Russian ships — which were visiting Pakistan to hold joint exercise with different domains of PN including Special Ops Forces and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency.

The objective of this visit by our Russian friends was not only limited to foster goodwill but was also aimed at developing procedures for conducting combined operations to curb illicit activities in the maritime domain, he maintained.

The commander said, “Pakistan Navy is engaged in multinational efforts to thwart crimes in the regional maritime domain, which in turn ensures a stable maritime environment vital for world’s economic and energy security.”

Commander Pakistan Fleet informed different arms of Pakistan Navy conducted a joint counter narcotics exercise with a Russian ship and members of FDCS in North Arabian Sea. “It is expected that this exercise will prove a stepping stone towards increasing interoperability and way forward for future exercises between the navies of the two countries,” he added.

“It is also believed that the visit of Russian ship Yarsolav Mudry to Karachi will usher new avenues of friendship and cooperation between our two countries in general and Navies in particular.”
