Recommendation: Judicial commission approves 12 judges

Eight LHC and four PHC nominees get the nod as additional judges

ISLAMABAD:

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has endorsed eight nominees for appointment as additional judges of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and four for the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

The panel, headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk, met on Friday to discuss the appointment of additional judges for the two superior courts.

Of the 11 nominations forwarded by LHC chief justice, the JCP gave the nod to eight individuals, including Ali Akbar Quraishi, Qazi Muhammad Amin, Khalid Mahmood Malik, Chaudhry Mushtaq Ahmad, Masood Abid Naqvi, Shahid Karim, Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal and Mirza Waqas Rauf.

Muhammad Ibrahim Khan’s name was dropped because of his age, while Anwarul Haq Pannu and Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry’s nominations were deferred. The LHC currently comprises 49 judges against its sanctioned strength of 40.

Likewise, the panel also approved four judges of the PHC, including Muhammad Younas Thahim, Qalandar Ali Khan, Muhammad Ghuzafar Khan and Haider Ali Khan, while Abdul Halim’s name was dropped due to age factor. At present, a total of 15 judges are serving on the PHC.

Reappointments

During the meeting, the commission also approved the reappointment of LHC judge, Ali Akbar Quraishi, who was sacked under the July 31, 2009 judgment of the Supreme Court.

Over 100 judges who were appointed on the recommendations of the then chief justice, Abdul Hameed Dogar were ousted following the apex court’s order.

Earlier this year, the commission approved the reappointment of Aamir Raza Naqvi as Sindh High Court judge. Similarly, the body also considered reinstalling NAB Prosecutor General K K Agha as SHC judge. However, Agha’s name was dropped after he refused to renounce his British nationality.

Meanwhile, superior bars have welcomed the commission’s decision to reappoint ousted judges, who are competent and hold an upright reputation among the legal fraternity.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Kamran Murtaza has also urged the chief justices of Balochistan High Court and Peshawar High Court to consider the reappointment of judges who were sent packing five years ago following the apex court’s ruling.
