Senate passes resolution congratulating Malala
House discusses attacks on LoC, criticises appointment of PIA technical engineers
ISLAMABAD:
The Senate unanimously passed a resolution felicitating Malala Yousafzai on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to promoting peace and education in the war-hit areas of Khyber-Pakthunkhwa (K-P).
The joint resolution was tabled by Awami National Party (ANP) senator Haji Mohammad Adeel.
“We appreciate and congratulate Malala Yousafzai for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize on her significant commitment and sacrifices for promoting peace and education in militants-hit areas of K-P,” the resolution reads.
The resolution further states that senators, on behalf of the Upper House as well on behalf of the entire nation, congratulate Malala Yousafzai for her services and sacrifices for a good cause in the country.
Criticism of govt on LoC attacks
Earlier, on a point of order, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senator Babar Awan criticised the government on what he described was the government’s "pathetic" approach in condemning Indian hostilities along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, which recently killed more than a dozen civilians and injured many more.
“I don’t see any condemnation of this aggression made by the prime minister or the defence minister in categorical terms, which further boosts the Indians. And their prime minister and ministers are continuously issuing threats of serious action to Pakistan,” said Awan.
“This aggression has been continuing for the last 32 days along the working boundary,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and other ministers neither visited the affected areas nor have they issued any effective statements against this aggression by the neighbouring country.
“On the other hand,” he said, “Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is continuously threatening Pakistan.”
In response to Awan’s point of view, leader of the house Raja Zafarul Haq said that it is wrong that the government has not done anything in response to the aggression by India, adding that it was Pakistan’s effective response that forced the other side to reduce hostility during the last two to three days
House objects appointments of PIA technical engineers
The house strongly objected the appointments of two technical engineers -- Irshad Ghani and Mamoonur Rashid – for the posts of sales and marketing managers in the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Senators said such illogical policies within the national airways could be the reason behind the downfall of PIA, as right people were not appointed in the right places.
“I must say that the PIA management seems to have appointed just any marketing expert for a technical job,” remarked Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) senator Babar Khan Ghauri.
He questioned how an engineer could better serve as a marketing and sales manager in the national flag carrier, stating that these choices were the reason that the PIA was plunging into financial losses every year. He added due to mismanagement and bad governance in the PIA, delays in the departure and arrival of flights had become a routine matter, which no one was taking care of.
Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Shaikh Aftab Ahmed said the appointment of technical officials against the marketing post was the decision of PIA's board of directors -- keeping in view the experience of the officers.
ANP Senator Illayas Bilour said that PIA has limited international flights to Peshawar to only one in a week, adding that the move was “against our province as the PIA used to operate two flights to the city daily in the past.”
