Violence in Africa: Body of Pakistani peacekeeper brought home

Soldier, who was part of UN mission in Central African Republic, was killed near the capital on Oct 9

KARACHI:
The body of a Pakistani soldier killed in Central African Republic has been brought back to Pakistan, Express News reported on Friday.

His funeral will be held in Karachi after Zuhr prayers today.

On October 9, the soldier, who was part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Central African Republic, was killed and nine others were injured near the capital.

It was the first peacekeeper death of the mission that deployed last month in the Central African Republic, taking over from African-led troops that were sent after a March 2013 coup plunged the country into bloodshed and chaos.

Pakistan had dispatched 1,100 troops to Bangui last month.

Bangui has been rocked by days of violence pitting the city’s Muslim and Christian populations.

The UN’s 130,000 troops, police and civilian staff serving in missions worldwide are being drawn into more complex conflicts while being tasked with enforcing fragile peace deals.
