Preedy Street extentsion road from Saddar Dawakhana to Khudadad Colony, Peoples Secretariat Chowrangi will be closed

The city's traffic police have formulated a diversion plan for the Pakistan Peoples Party rally on Saturday.


The rally which is supposed to take place at the Quaid's mazaar and Bagh-e-Jinnah, is expected to cause a traffic jam. However, to ensure a smooth flow of traffic, the traffic police has announced diversion routes for vehicles coming towards MA Jinnah Road.

According to the DIG of the Karachi traffic police, Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh, the traffic plan has been made to help commuters and to avoid traffic jams on the day of the rally. He asked people travelling on Saturday to cooperate with the traffic police and take the diversion routes to avoid problems on the road.

The routes

The Preedy Street extention road from Saddar Dawakhana to Khudadad Colony and Peoples Secretariat Chowrangi will be closed for traffic. Commuters will have to take Mansfield Street to reach Lucky Star and then head towards Sharae Faisal.

Vehicles coming from Sharae Faisal to Sharae Quaideen will be diverted towards Regent Plaza and Lucky Star, from where they can head to MA Jinnah Road - which will be closed from Capri Cinema to Guru Mandir. From here the vehicles can turn left towards Naz Plaza and then turn right near the Coast Guard Street towards Bahadar Yar Jang Road, Holy Family Hospital, Soldier Bazaar and go towards Lasbela and Nazimabad.

For vehicles coming from University Road towards MA Jinnah Road, diversions have been made at Nipa Chowrangi towards Drigh Road and Sharae Faisal. People can also turn left at Hassan Square towards National Stadium and Karsaz.

The traffic coming in from Sohrab Goth towards Teen Hati and Saddar will turn left at Teen Hati towards Jail Chowrangi, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Baloch Colony and Sharae Faisal. While the traffic from Nazimabad to Guru Mandir will turn right at Lasbela Chowk towards Garden and Makki Masjid.

Security precautions

Around 112 walk-through gates and 300 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are being set up in and around the venue of the October 18 rally near the Quaid's Mausoleum where the PPP aims to show its strength.

The police and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) officials will monitor the event through the cameras at the command and control system. According to officials, 25 walk-through gates will be set up at each side of MA Jinnah Road and Peoples Chowrangi alone. Meanwhile, three such gates will be set up from Capri Cinema to Numaish on MA Jinnah Road.

Apart from this, 16 walk-through gates will be established in the parking area, which includes Kashmir Road, China Ground and KMC Complex. Around 10 to 20 generators will be arranged with the help of K-Electric to take care of the electricity needs of the rally. IT officials said that dozens of large video screens will be put up around the ground so that the people who remain outside can also watch the Bilawal's speech.

A fateha and Quran Khawani have been organised by the PPP for the victims of the October 18, 2007 blast as the site of the incident. Sharae Faisal will remain closed temporarily. According to the party’s Sindh information secretary, Waqar Mehdi, the event will be held in the morning before the jalsa on Saturday.
