Mild earthquake hits northern areas

Earthquake of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter scale jolts several areas of the country before dawn.

An earthquake of mild intensity, measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale, jolted several areas of the country before dawn on Monday, causing panic among the people.

The meteorological department confirmed that the earthquake was recorded as having a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale and that its epicenter was 119km northwest of Peshawar.

The tremors were felt at around 5.50am in the morning in Abbotabad, Mansehra, Bannu, Dir, Malakand, Kurram. Khyber agency, Hangu and Swabi.


No casualties have been reported.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake hit Quetta on Friday in which ten people were reported injured.

In October 2005, a major earthquake in the Northern areas and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa killed around 80,000 people and left millions homeless.
