Information at doorstep: Excise Dept to launch new SMS service

The department’s existing SMS service (9989) is being discontinued

LAHORE:
The Excise and Taxation Department is going to introduce a new text message service for providing vehicle registration details, The Express Tribune has learnt.

The department’s existing SMS service (9989) is being discontinued. It provided registration details of a vehicle and the status of its number plate. It was being managed by the Awami Service Technology (AST). Before that the department had launched the 9966 service, managed by the Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL). The service was made operational on trial basis in January, 2014. Data of 8.6 million vehicles was uploaded for the SMS service from all the 36 districts of the province.

By August, PRAL had stopped updating the data on its server and it was replaced by the 9989 service.

Excise and Taxation Region-B Director Masudul Haq said that the 9989 service was too expensive and the agreement had to be cancelled. “Earlier, the 9966 service, which had worked successfully, had to be cancelled as well,” he said.

“We will introduce another text service within a few days. It will be managed by the Punjab Information Technology Board. The department will have the ownership of the new text service,” he said.
