Seminar: ‘Freshwater food resources shrinking’

The speakers at a seminar organised by the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum on Wednesday highlighted the issue of depleting freshwater food resources.
They pointed out that despite 1,260 freshwater bodies in Sindh, the resources are shrinking. “Not just fish, but the production of water vegetables which were a food source for the fishing communities, has also declined,” said PFF’s Mushtaq Meerani, who hails from an area near the Manchar Lake. He identified land grabbing and development projects initiated without the consultancy of local people as the cause.
Centre for Environment and Development’s Nasir Panhwar emphasised the need to promote the concepts of community fishing, farming and forestry.
