Multan gears up for by-polls

Despite requests by authorities for postponement, by-elections for NA-149 Multan II will commence at 8am on Oct 16

MULTAN:
With preparations for the by-elections in National Assembly constituency NA-149 Multan II underway, ballot boxes and polling material are being delivered to polling stations using public transport, Express News reported on Wednesday.

Despite requests by authorities in Punjab to postpone the polls following a stampede at a Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf rally in Multan that left seven supporters dead, the by-elections for former PTI president Javed Hashmi's seat will commence at 8am on October 16.

The highly-sensitive and confidential election material is being delivered to polling stations via public conveyance, such as rickshaws, as well as motorcycles and a police van.

The election commission has provided 80 buses for the transport of the election material; however, these have been parked in the grounds owing to the absence of drivers.

Those delivering the election material using motorcycles and public transport have said that with only 20 hours remaining before the by-polls commence, waiting for the bus drivers will delay the material reaching polling stations in time.

Later in the day, helicopters were used to drop pamphlets in the NA-149 constituency canvasing Javed Hashmi, Express News reported.

Moreover, Hashmi said he didn't have anything to do with the aerial pamphlet dropping.
