Rigging alegations: Petition asks top court to form commission

Argues that people want to know the authenticity of the general elections

ISLAMABAD:

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Saturday to constitute a judicial commission to investigate rigging claims in the general elections 2013.

The petitioner, Raja Munawar Ahmed – through his counsel Qamar Afzal – urged the court to set up a judicial commission – to be headed by an apex court judge and comprising five high court judges – with a stipulated time frame to probe into the conduct of the General Election 2013 from its inception to the formation of the government.

“The Judicial Commission exercising its judicial authority should be directed to complete its report within 30 days and report the matter to the Honourable Supreme Court and be decided in the presence of the political parties and decree the finding of the report to the satisfaction of the public at large,” the petition read.

The petitioner further pleaded that all the responsible institutions and bodies be directed to provide full assistance to the judicial commission as a priority. “All the contentious political forces be allowed to produce their evidences during the proceedings,” he said.

Advocate Qamar Afzal filed the petition under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution and made federation, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), K-P government, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad as respondents.
