Cottage industry: Punjab may establish more industrial estates

Seven sites have been identified for such zones

SIALKOT:

The Punjab government is actively considering establishing more small industrial estates to facilitate small and medium enterprises, vendors and manufacturers in the city.

Following a joint survey by the Punjab Small Industries Corporation (PSIC) in collaboration with the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), seven
sites have been identified for setting up the small industrial estates, says a press release.

The steps are being taken on the demand of trade bodies including the SCCI.

The industrial estates will be established along with entrance roads for accommodating industrial vendors, suppliers and service providers, enabling them to set up their workplaces.

At present, there is only one industrial estate in Sialkot, which is unable to cater to the needs of growing number of vendors.

As a result, hundreds of small vendors and manufacturers are scattered in far-off places around the city. They have not been able to buy a small piece of land for setting up their manufacturing units.

Sialkot is a hub of cottage industries and almost all products manufactured in these units are exported to the international market and have a substantial share in total exports of Pakistan.

Work on the proposed industrial estates is expected to kick off very soon.
