Express News correspondent from Gujranwala Yaqoob Shehzad was shot dead on Sunday, Express News reported.
Shehzad was sitting in a showroom when unidentified armed men entered the office and opened fire. Shehzad was shot thrice and killed, while one person sitting next to him was injured.
Condemning the killing, the DPO said police have reached the site and were collecting evidence from the showroom. Police will also talk to the injured man once his condition is stable.
Shehzad had been working with Express News since the channel started. He was also the chairperson of the city’s press club.
Police said they will also look into Shehzad’s news reports aired in the past few days to see if he was targeted because of his work.
Express News reported that a Dunya News correspondent was targeted in a similar manner a few days ago in the city.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of Yaqoob’s murder and asked DPO Hafizabad to submit a report within 24 hours.
Other senior parliamentary leaders, including PML-Q’s Chaudhry Pervez Elahi and PPP’s Qamar Zaman Kaira have condemned the murder.
