Change of guard: Shahid Hayat likely to be next head of CID

Sindh IGP’s recommendation awaits CM's approval.

KARACHI:

Former Karachi police chief Shahid Hayat is expected to be appointed as the deputy inspector general of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) after Sindh IGP Ghulam Haider Jamali recommended him, The Express Tribune learnt on Saturday.

Although there were reports that the Sindh government had issued a notification about Hayat's appointment as CID DIG, a well-placed source in CM House told The Express Tribune that this was not correct.

"No such notification has been issued yet but it is in the pipeline," he clarified, adding that Jamali had recommended Hayat for the appointment and moved a summary to the provincial chief secretary but the latter has yet to forward it to the chief minister for approval.

"One of the reasons for appointing Hayat to this position is that the chairperson of the Pakistan Peoples Party believes that he is the officer who can replace slain CID SP Chaudhry Aslam Khan," the source explained, saying that it was likely that a notification will be issued after the Eidul Azha holidays.

The current CID DIG, Zafar Bukhari, will be retiring in the coming week. Hayat will probably also take acting charge of the post of CID additional IG, which has been vacant since former AIG Iqbal Mehmood left the department.

Hayat was previously removed from the post of Karachi AIG in May 2014 after a Supreme Court decision termed him ineligible for the post, as it was a Grade 21 position and he was a Grade 20 officer.

He has been awaiting a fresh appointment since then. Sources in the police department told The Express Tribune that he had also been offered the position of the chief of the Federal Investigation Agency, Sindh chapter, but he refused.

Hayat is among the police officers who initiated the on-going targeted operation in Karachi.
