Balancing staff: Masjid schools shut down over low enrolment

Teachers at these schools were directed to report to the nearest government primary schools

MANSEHRA:

The education department issued a notification to shutdown 120 non-functional Masjid Makatib (mosque schools) across Mansehra district.

Teachers at these schools were directed to report to the nearest government primary schools, said official sources on Friday. The decision was made after the submission of monitoring reports which stated that schools being run at mosques recorded nominal enrolment. The report added primary schools in the same vicinity were, however, short of teaching staff.

According to a notification issued from the office of Mansehra district education officer on September 29, 120 government masjid schools in Balakot, Oghi and Mansehra have been closed and their teachers transferred to the nearest government schools. When approached, district education officer Gohar Ali confirmed the development.

According to the Bureau of Statistics Report 2011-12, Mansehra has 459 masjid schools with 14,449 students and 463 teachers while there are over 1,548 government primary schools in the district for both boys and girls.
