Dead end: Talks between teachers, education officials fail

Govt refused to implement delegation’s suggested rationalisation formula of 40 students per teacher instead of 60

PESHAWAR:

Negotiations between All Teachers Association (ATA) and the education department to sort out differences on the formula of rationalisation, which determines the number of students per teacher, have failed.

ATA representatives met senior education officials, including Additional Secretary Education Qaisar Alam and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Education Director Rafiq Khattak to discuss the matter on Tuesday. The delegation of teachers was led by K-P All Teachers Coordination Council Chairman Faiq Zada and included ATA Peshawar President Haji Ashraf Khan, Peoples’ Teacher Forum (PTF) K-P President Akhtar Ali and others.

When contacted following the moot, ATA press secretary Nasir Khan told The Express Tribune that teachers suggested that primary schools have six classrooms with one teacher for each of them.

Khan added the government refused to implement the delegation’s suggested rationalisation formula of 40 students per teacher instead of the current 60. However, the additional secretary said the formula would be implemented later in upcoming teacher transfers.

The delegation also demanded the K-P government restore the sons’ quota for vacant posts in government schools. The quota has reportedly been stopped in the education department since 1997.

Khan also stated teachers hope to have the timescale promotion formula implemented soon.

Requesting anonymity, a senior education department official confirmed to The Express Tribune that the negotiations had failed and government had refused their rationalisation demand.
