Senior journalists remembered

Speakers gathered for memorial service for Iqbal Jaffery and Abul Akhyar agreed they learned from both personalities.

KARACHI:
Senior journalists are living institutions who can benefit newcomers by polishing their talent and offering advice.

All the speakers, who had gathered for a memorial service for Iqbal Jaffery and Abul Akhyar at the Karachi Press Club on Friday, agreed that they learned a lot from both personalities.

Several journalists, such as Abdul Hameed Chhapra, Idrees Bakhtiar, Abid Ali Syed, Mazhar Abbas, Professor Dr Tauseef Ahmed, Maqsood Yusufi, Owais Tohid, editor of daily Dawn Zafar Abbas and others paid tribute.

As the first speaker, Abid Ali Syed shared his experiences with Iqbal Jaffery. He always encouraged people to learn, complete their education and then enter the profession, Syed recalled. Mazhar Abbas and Idrees Bakhtiar shared their views and said that Jaffery was always found at even the most dangerous spots. He had a strong network of resources and was always accurate with the facts, they added.

Dr Tauseef Ahmed and Yusufi brought to light another aspect of Jaffery’s personality; mainly that he always helped journalists when they were in trouble.

Jaffery’s son, Hasan Iqbal Jafri, also spoke on the occasion.

Hasan recounted the work done by his father and how he tackled various challenges he faced in the course of his professional duties.
