Salman Butt's lawyer withdraws from spot-fixing case

LAHORE: Suspended cricketer Salman Butt suffered a blow Saturday in his fight to have his name cleared over spot-fixing allegations after his lawyer withdrew from the case.

"I don't think the suspended players will get justice, so I have withdrawn from the case," Aftab Gul told Pakistani media of the case which will be heard in Qatar from January 6-11 next year.

Salman, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer were provisionally suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) last month over allegations of spot-fixing during Pakistan's tour of England.

The suspension came after revelations in British newspaper News of the World, which claimed several Pakistani players took money to bowl deliberate no-balls during the Lord's Test against England in August.

Gul, along with another lawyer Khalid Ranjha, represented Salman during the appeal against the suspension, which was dismissed last month.

Aamer, who was represented by lawyer Shahid Karim, also had his appeal turned down, while Asif withdrew his appeal after initially deciding to challenge the punishment.

The ICC on Friday announced a three-man panel led by Michael Beloff to hear the case of the players in which the actual charges levelled against the players will be examined.

So like any other lawyer he has decided go the "saazish" route. I am a big Pakistani cricket fan and would love to find any holes in the case against the three (Butt, Aamer and Asif) but honestly the three were caught RED HANDED with their PANTS DOWN. What I would like is that those three can somewhat redeem themselves by helping out Zulqarnain Haider and coming clean about everyone that is involved in match fixing.
Adrian David | 14 years ago | Reply What i want to say is that its a shamefull situation for Pakistan. But with the recent incident of Zulkernain Haider, i conclude that something is fishy. Players are asked to fix match, and if they dont they are out of the team. Biggest example is Akmal Brothers. They get out on crucial points and if seen carefully all the times it seems that they have thrown their wicket away. Mr. Ejaz Butt and Mr Zardari i think all of them are involved. Trio are just victims, who should be spared. Zulqernain Haider cearly said that the bookies said "be a part of us, or you wont stay in the team" Hats of to Mr Zulqernain Haider. Akmal brothers and dont know how many of them are involved in fixing. the best example is that Mr Taufeeq Umer has best average amoung any player in the team 39.09 and has been included in that team after 4 years.
