FWMC, Wasa gear up for Eid cleanliness drive

The Faisalabad Waste Management Company (FWMC) and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) have made special cleanliness arrangements for Eidul Azha holidays.

FWMC Managing Director Amjad Ali Awan told The Express Tribune on Tuesday 400 handcarts, 200 waste bins and 2,000 uniforms had been distributed among the company staff in 113 union councils.

“For the first time in the city, more than 50,000 biodegradable bags will be distributed free of cost to dispose of the animal waste,” Awan said.

He said the bags would be available at 30 stalls the FWMC would set up across the city to create awareness about cleanliness.

Mosques and other places holding Eid prayers would be cleaned and marked with lime, he said.

Operations Managers Dawood Makki and Muhammad Ijaz said arrangements were in place to keep animal markets clean. They said 70 sanitary workers had been cleaning the markets under the supervision of 10 officials.

They said 50 metric tonnes of waste was being disposed of from the markets daily. They said the FWMC would offer its services at 350 slaughter points in the city.

The objective is to remove 9,000 tonnes of animal waste during the three days of sacrifice, they said. “Eighteen temporary sites have been identified to dump the waste.”

The transport manager said 242 vehicles would be in service. The WASA has formed 90 teams to clean the sewer lines during Eid holidays.

Managing Director Syed Zahid Aziz said a plan had been made to keep the city clean. He said 90 teams would clean sewer lines and drains before Eid. He said 400 sanitary workers would be on duty during the holidays.

He urged citizens not to dump offal in sewer lines and drains. “Doing so can choke the sewerage system,” he said.
