Contempt of court: LHC issues notices to PTI and PAT
Petitioner accuses the two parties
of staging sit-ins in violation of
court’s orders.
LAHORE:
Lahore High Court on Monday issued notices to the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) and the attorney general of Pakistan to argue the maintainability of a petition seeking contempt of court proceedings against the two parties for violating its earlier order regarding sit-ins in Islamabad.
A three-member LHC bench, headed by Justice Khalid Mahmood Khan, also ordered the AGP to produce record of the Supreme Court order, if there was any. He adjourned the hearing until October 15.
AK Dogar had filed the petition accusing the PTI and PAT of staging the sit-ins in violation of the court’s orders.
On August 13, the bench had restrained both the parties from holding sit-ins in an unconstitutional way.
Dogar requested the court to punish all PTI and PAT members and disqualify them for public offices.
Separately, Justice Khan issued a notice to the Home Department directing it to submit a report of the Justice Akhtar Hussain Commission involving PAT chief Tahirul Qadri. A law officer told the judge the report could not be found. The judge expressed his dismay and directed the home secretary to present the report at the next hearing on October 15.
Amjad Ali Qasim had filed the petition through Advocate Fahad Siddique and Jawad Ashraf submitting that Qadri had been inciting violence. He said a judicial commission had already declared Qadri insane. The petitioner requested the court to restrain the PAT leader from addressing people.
