Afghan transition: Mamnoon to attend Ghani’s swearing-in
The visit would also contribute to strengthening the fraternal ties between the two countries, says Foreign Office
ISLAMABAD:
President Mamnoon Hussain will attend the inauguration of Ashraf Ghani as the new president of Afghanistan during his visit to Kabul, the Foreign Office announced on Sunday.
President Mamnoon will be visiting Kabul on Monday (today), it said. “The president’s participation in the inauguration ceremony underscores Pakistan’s consistent support for peaceful democratic transition in Afghanistan,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
The visit would also contribute to strengthening the fraternal ties between the two countries, it said.
Afghanistan’s political rivals—Dr Ashraf Ghani and Dr Abdullah Abdullah— recently signed a landmark deal for the unity government after months of political uncertainty over the democratic transition in the war-torn country.
Pakistan has welcomed the agreement signed between the two presidential candidates in Afghanistan for a unity government terming it a positive development.
Pakistan has been also closely watching the developments unfolding in the neighbouring country. Relations between the two neighbours have been tense in recent weeks due to allegations and counter-allegations regarding militant attacks. Afghan President Hamid Karzai in a farewell speech blamed Pakistan and the US for destabilising his country.
But Islamabad opted not to respond to the outburst of the outgoing Afghan president.
