High Court orders Gullu Butt’s release

A law officer appearing on behalf of the home secretary said Butt was a threat to law and order.

LAHORE:

An application was filed last week at Lahore High Court seeking disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on charges of money laundering. Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffree filed the application in a pending case on foreign assets of Pakistani politicians. He said Sharif had sent money abroad through illegal means. He said prime minister did not meet the eligibility criteria for being a member of parliament prescribed in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.  The lawyer requested for a seven-judge bench to hear the petition.

Gullu Butt released

On Friday, Lahore High Court declared the detention of Gullu Butt accused of vandalising property on June 17, illegal and directed the government to release him. Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan passed the order on a petition moved by Butt. Butt’s counsel said that a division bench of the LHC had released him on bail but he was detained by the government again. He asked the court to order his release. A law officer appearing on behalf of the home secretary said Butt was a threat to law and order.

PAT, PTI workers released

Last week, Lahore High Court set aside the detention orders for Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers and directed the government to release them. Justice Qasim Khan issued the order after accepting three identical petitions challenging detention of political workers under a maintenance of public order (MPO).

Plea against Maryam Nawaz Sharif dismissed

Lahore High Court dismissed a plea seeking a larger bench to hear a petition challenging Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s appointment as chairperson of Prime Minister’s Youth Loan Programme.

The court was hearing an application moved by PTI worker Zubair Niazi through advocate Sheraz Zaka in a petition challenging appointment of Maryam Nawaz as chairperson.

The petitioner’s counsel said the government had issued a notification on November 22, 2013, on the appointment of Maryam Nawaz as chairperson of Prime Minister’s Youth Loan Program.

He said the appointment illegal as no public notice or advertisement was issued before the appointment.

He said prior consultation with the Council of Common Interests was mandatory under the law but the appointment was made without it.

The petitioner asked the court to set aside the appointment.
