Roughing up: Two cops suspended for thrashing man
Incident occurs when gas-cylinder supplier is intercepted by policemen, who ask him to bring them food
ISLAMABAD:
Two policemen have been suspended for allegedly roughing up a citizen after he refused their ‘orders’.
The suspended officials were identified as Khalid, a constable, and Shahid, a head constable.
The incident occurred last week on Embassy Road in the limits of the Aabpara police when Siraj Ahmed, a gas-cylinder supplier, who was on his way to drop cylinders to his clients in a Suzuki pick-up, was intercepted by a group of policemen, asking him to bring them food from a nearby food outlet.
Ahmed, who was said to be in a hurry, reportedly refused to follow the order insisting he be allowed to go.
Ahmed said around half a dozen policemen, who were on security duty, intercepted him near a cricket ground while he was on his way to deliver cylinders to hotels and restaurants.
He said the policemen told him they will not allow his vehicle to proceed unless he brought them food in his vehicle. Ahmed said when he refused, the two policemen dragged him out of his vehicle and ‘presented’ him before a senior policeman, before manhandling him.
In the meanwhile, Ahmed, who said he was also the supplier of a senior police official, dialed his number to inform him about the whole episode. When the senior police official responded to Ahmed’s call, the policemen refused to attend the call.
Ahmed claimed that Khalid got angry over the phone call and beat him up, adding that he dialed the senior police officer’s number again and this time around, he managed to make him talk to the policemen.
According to the victim, the policemen narrated an entirely different story to their senior official claiming that “I misbehaved with them”.
The policemen, in the meanwhile, impounded his vehicle and shifted it to the Aabpara Police Station. They also asked Ahmed to write a statement apologising to them, saying that he misbehaved with them and he be pardoned. The police later allowed him to go along with his vehicle.
Ahmed later lodged a case demanding an inquiry against the cops who beat him up.
Aabpara Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Turabul Hassan confirmed that the incident had taken place in his police jurisdiction. He said an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain if the two policemen manhandled Ahmed.
A spokesperson for the Superintendent of Police City said both the policemen have been suspended and an inquiry into the incident has been ordered. He said that strict action will be taken against the policemen if they were found guilty.

He, however, did not disclose which police station the suspended policemen belonged to. Ahmed said he is worried for his safety as one of the policemen threatened him of dire consequences if he takes the issue any further.
