Care for your heart: ‘Over 17m people die of CVD each year’

More than 17 million people die of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) each year, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). An awareness session was organised at the Aga Khan University Hospital to mark World Heart Day on Sunday. AKU cardiology section head Dr Khawar Kazmi said this number of deaths is expected to rise to 23 million in the next 10 to 15 years, with 80 per cent of the deaths occurring in low-income countries like Pakistan. He also mentioned that men and women are equally at risk of CVD.
