August 30 melee: Court orders another FIR against PM

Petitioners claim police had resorted to intense shelling, fired rubber bullets at ‘peaceful protesters’

ISLAMABAD:

A lower court ordered the police on Saturday to register another FIR against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and key government officials for their alleged involvement in the killing of four PTI workers, who, the party claims, died on August 30.

An additional district and sessions judge ordered the Secretariat police to register an FIR against the PM Nawaz, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and a couple of senior police officials on a petition filed by PTI’s top leadership.

The petitioners claimed that the police had resorted to intense shelling of teargas canisters and fired rubber bullets at ‘peaceful protesters’ who were marching towards the Prime Minister House on August 30.  “As a result of this shelling and firing, four of the PTI workers died,” it claimed.

The Secretariat police have already registered a similar FIR against the PM and his key cabinet members for allegedly killing Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers in the same incident. The police have also constituted a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the matter.
