A key player behind the murder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zahra Shahid Hussain was arrested on Thursday.
Karachi AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo disclosed the arrests in a press conference at the Central Police Office on Thursday. Hussain, the then-central vice-president of PTI, was gunned down outside her house in Defence Phase IV, on May 19 last year, a day before the re-elections in some of the polling stations of the NA-250 constituency.
Earlier, police investigators believed that Hussain was murdered while resisting a robbery bid. However, the police refuted the idea on Thursday and said that it was an act of targeted killing with a ‘specific motive’.
On Thursday, the South Zone police arrested a man identified as Rashid from DHA’s Badar Commercial Area. South DIG Abdul Khalique Sheikh told The Express Tribune that Rashid was the key player in the murder. “We have also recovered a pistol from his possession and the weapon has been sent to the forensics division,” he said. “It will be confirmed later whether or not the bullets fired on Hussain were from this pistol.” Rashid is associated with a political party, said Sheikh, refusing to disclose the name of the party.
