KPT stun K-Electric in 2-1 victory
PIA down favourites NBP with similar score in PPFL.
KARACHI:
The 12-team Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) witnessed a day of upsets on Wednesday as KPT stunned K-Electric (K-E) 2-1 at their home ground and PIA defeated favourites NBP with the same scoreline at the Dr Muhammad Ali Shah Stadium on Wednesday.
KPT and K-E played a goalless first half, after which the opening goal of the match came from the former team’s Zahid Hamid on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute.
K-E equalised the score with Rehman’s goal in the 61st minute, but KPT sealed the win in the 84th minute.
According to match commissioner Ali Nawaz Baloch, both teams fought hard, but K-E missed a penalty kick awarded to them in the 12th minute, whereas KPT also missed one in the first half.
“K-E missed the opportunities to score,” Baloch told The Express Tribune. “However, the teams will improve as the league progresses.”
Meanwhile, PIA surprised match favourites NBP 2-1 at the new PPFL venue.
NBP took the lead in the 34th minute with Maqbool’s goal, but PIA’s Muhammad Kamran equalised 10 minutes later, with the team sealing victory through Zeeshan Ali’s goal in the 90th minute.
“There was a crowd of 2,000 at this stadium,” said match commissioner Qamar Yar Khan.
“This venue is attracting spectators and the pitch available here is the best among the other grounds in the city. It’s a new facility and we’re using it for PPFL for the first time.”
So far, KPT are leading the league table with six points, whereas Army, Muslim FC, Afghan FC, K-E and PIA have three points each.
Wapda and PAF have one point on the table after recording a draw in their opening match.
