Karachi violence: Policemen among five shot dead; bomb injures two
A retired professor and spiritual faith healer are also among five killed in city violence
KARACHI:
A policeman and a rickshaw driver were wounded in a low-intensity bomb blast occurred in District Central of Karachi while a police officer, retired professor and spiritual faith healer were shot dead in different acts of targeted killings late on Tuesday night. A policeman and an alleged criminal were also killed in separate encounters.
ASI Imam Shah, 50, and rickshaw driver Naeem Hameed, 45, were wounded when unidentified armed assailants hurled a hand grenade outside the Hyderi police station on Tuesday evening. The injured were immediately shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
A private car and a rickshaw were also partially damage in the blast.
SHO Abid Hussain Shah said this was the second such attack to take place in the past five days. In the first attack, armed motorcyclists had hurled a small improvised explosive device (IED) at the police mobile of Taimuria police station.
Shah added that per initial investigations, it looked as if the same group was behind both attacks, though further investigation were underway.
Separately, a police sub-inspector, SI Rana Sarwar, 50, son of Gul Sher was killed near Peoples Chowrangi, within the remits of Taimuria police station.
Police officials said the deceased on his motorcycle was on his way home in Buffer Zone when at least two armed men riding a motorcycle targeted and killed him. He was shot once in the head and died on the spot.
His body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
In another act of targeted killing, a retired government school teacher identified as Anis Anwar was shot dead near Saifee College in North Nazimabad, within the limits of Hyderi police station.
SHO Shah said the deceased was passing through the area in his car when armed motorcyclists shot and killed him. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy.
Similarly, a spiritual faith-healer was shot dead inside his ‘Astana’ located at Janjal Goth in Sohrab Goth. Deceased was identified as Imran Khan.
Police officials said that unidentified culprits entered his Astana and escaped after shooting him multiple times.
Encounters
A police constable was killed in an exchange of fire with the criminals near New Karachi Chowrangi, within the limits of New Karachi police station.
The deceased, identified as Ejaz Ahmed, was busy in snap checking along with other policemen when he and other policemen tried to intercept three suspects riding on two motorcycles.
SHO Muhammad Ali said that armed suspects were hailed by the officials to stop. Instead, the fired at the officials while trying to escape. As a result, police constable Ejaz Ahmed was killed.
A suspected criminal was killed during an alleged encounter with the police in Gulshan-e-Maymar.
Manghopir SHO Ghulam Hussain Korai said the encounter took place when his police team was headed towards Gulshan-e-Maymar for raiding a criminal hideout.
Korai said that unidentified armed motorcycles ambushed the police mobile.
Police returned fire, killing one suspect. Police constable Najeeb was also injured in the exchange of fire. The suspect has yet to be identified.
