KARACHI: The city administration will fully support the traffic police to help avert road traffic accidents in the metropolis, said Karachi commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui during a meeting at his office on Tuesday. Taking stock of the situation, he attributed the high incidence of accidents to the absolute disregard of traffic rules and regulations by the city’s residents themselves. He specifically mentioned the lack of usage of helmets by motorcyclists, who were often the worst victims of accidents. “These motorcyclists are also frequently reported to be among the worst violators of traffic rules, putting themselves as well as others in jeopardy,” he added. Siddiqui said that concerted efforts were needed to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations, for which he would approach the Karachi AIGP and traffic authorities. He also sought the support of civil society organisations and the media in educating the public about the importance of traffic regulations.
