KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Irum Azeem Farooque on Monday resigned from her seat as well as from her party, citing stress and influx of opportunists.

Farooque tweeted that she can not work with opportunists who are destroying the party.

The parliamentarian, who is currently touring the US, said that the seat was not her priority.

Farooque insisted that party chief Altaf Hussain had backed her, but she could not take the stress anymore. She maintained that she was committed to her party leadership and would remain so.

Farooque had been nominated on a reserved seat for women in the Sindh Assembly by MQM. She was a vocal member of the party, and in the Sindh Assembly was a member of standing committees on Cooperatives, Labour and Human Resources, and committee on rules of procedure and privileges.

In June she had presented a resolution on behalf of the party supporting the army operation in North Waziristan.
