Mystery murder: MPA’s husband found dead in storeroom
Shamim Akhtar says they had been receiving threats to life.
LAHORE:
The husband of Provincial Assembly Member (MPA) Shamim Akhtar was found lying dead at their house in Samanabad on Monday.
The MPA, a resident of Justice Sharif Colony, told police she had gone to a wedding in Pakki Thatti late on Sunday. She said her husband Mian Kabir Ahmad was missing when she returned home.
She said she and her son and a daughter later found Ahmad’s body in a storeroom on the upper floor of the house.
Police have sent the body for an autopsy at Mayo Hospital. They said the body bore no signs of torture although the family insisted he had been murdered.
Police said the MPA had told them the couple had been receiving threats to life from unidentified people and had an FIR registered in that regard.
Station House Officer (SHO) Muhammad Iqbal said the deceased had been found in a chair. A beverage bottle was found next to him.
He said the drink had been sent to a forensic lab for examination.
Iqbal Town Superintendent (SP) Ammara Athar said police were waiting for medical and forensic lab reports.
An adopted son of the deceased, Nauman alias Nomi, had been named suspect in the FIR registered under Section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code. He had not been arrested until the filing of this report. Police said he had been living separately for two years.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed the inspector general of police to submit a report on the death. He has also expressed sympathy with the bereaved family.
