Tragic killing: Murdered army man buried, FIR registered

Three attackers had targeted participants of mehfil-i-sama at shrine.

FAISALABAD:
Police registered a case on Sunday after three unidentified gunmen shot dead a brigadier, his brother and another participant of a mehfil-i-sama at a shrine in Sargodha late on Saturday night.

Six other people were also injured in the attack.

Sargodha Cantonment SHO Farooq Hasanat said that a case had been registered under the Pakistan Penal Code and the Anti Terrorism Act against three unidentified attackers on the complaint of Masood Ahmad, a relative of the deceased.

Brigadier Fazl Rabbani, his brother Fazl Qadri and Dr Ayub were shot dead by attackers as they sat listening to qawaals.

Hasanat told The Express Tribune on Sunday that Rabbani was the mutawalli of Astana Fazl, where he used to arrange a mehfil every year.

“Three motorcyclists, who were wearing masks, arrived at the shrine and asked the people about Rabbani.

When people pointed him out, the attackers started firing. Rabbani, his brother and another person died on the spot.

Six other people received bullet injuries and were taken to hospital,” the SHO said.

SSP Chaudhry Mumtaz Deow told The Express Tribune on Sunday that Sargodha DPO Raja Muhammad Basharat had formed an investigation team consisting of an SP and two DSPs.

“The DPO will head the team and supervise the investigation.

The team is collecting evidence.

Police are trying to determine whether the murders were motivated by sectarianism or personal enmity,” he said.

“It could be a terrorist attack to spread fear in the area because a military officer was targetted,” he said.

SHO Hasanat said that postmortem examination of the bodies had been completed. Brig Rabbani and his brother were laid to rest at the shrine. A special contingent of the army presented the guard of honour.

Floral wreaths were also laid at the grave. Tributes were also paid for him and people present praised his services for the country.
