Several businessmen have received a letter warning them to pay Rs500,000 each to avoid being kidnapped and killed.
RAJANPUR KALAN:
Several businessmen of the Baloch tribe in Jamaldinwali area have received a letter from “notorious criminals of the Kacha Karachi area” warning them to pay Rs500,000 each to avoid being kidnapped and killed.
These criminals have already abducted Sherbaz Baloch and are demanding Rs1 million in ransom for his release.
The text of the letter, available to The Express Tribune, states, “We know that you have a lot of money, send Rs1 million to the Kacha Karachi area if you want to see Sherbaz Baloch free.”
The letter further asks the Baloch businessmen to pay Rs500,000 each or else they will be abducted and killed.”
The letter says that Sherbaz had told them that his tribesmen have a lot of money and that “you will only be spared if you pay us our ‘due share’.” It dares the traders that if they are courageous enough they should try venturing out of their homes after sunset.
The letter is addressed to Akbar Baloch, Ali Nawaz Baloch, Muhammad Nawaz Baloch, Haq Nawaz Baloch, Shah Nawaz Baloch, Habib Nawaz Baloch, Siddiq Baloch, Jamil Baloch and Haliq Baloch.
Talking to The Tribune, Akbar Baloch, uncle of the abducted Sherbaz, said that they received the letter on last Friday. He said that they went to Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood, a PML-F MPA, and informed him about the threat they were facing from the criminal elements in Katcha Karachi. He said that the MPA could not offer much assistance, “He suggested that we get arms licences to beef up our security.
The letter is sent by Baba Lang Lathani, Lal Khan, Badal, Addu, Bangal, Mehr Muhammad and Dost Muhammad of the Kacha Karachi area.
Akbar said that he had tried to register an FIR with the Bhong police station in connection with his nephew’s abduction. He said that he contacted Basharat Ullah Niazi, the in-charge of the Jamaldinwali police post, on September 18, 2010 in this regard.
The in-charge, he said, kept the application but has not yet registered an FIR in the case. Niazi told The Tribune that he was carrying out an inquiry into the matter and will only register an FIR after completing the investigation. Akbar said that his tribesmen had stopped relying on the police and that only an army action in the area could protect them from the wrath of the criminals.
Akbar said that about 100 to 150 people of his tribe, all residents of Haji Muhammad Mulsani village, were involved in different businesses in Jamaldinwali city. He accused MPA Sardar Salim Jan Khan Mazari of patronising the criminal elements in the Katcha Karachi area.
“It is a forest. It falls under Sardar Mazari’s constituency,” he said, adding, that he went to Mazari and informed him about the kidnapping of his nephew. “He refused to listen to our grievances, saying that I can’t do anything to help you,” he added.
