KARACHI:

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claimed to have arrested one of the most influential gangsters in Karachi on Friday.

Muhammad Waseem alias Waseem Beater took the reins as the gambling lord of Karachi after the killing of Shoaib Khan. Beater, along with Ejaz Memon, expanded their business from Ghas Mandi and the two are now known as the kingpins of the gambling world in Karachi as well as rural Sindh.

Beater, originally a policeman who rose through the ranks from constable to a sub-inspector after receiving out-of-turn promotions, was believed to be more powerful than the IGP in Sindh. The influence of the former policeman was such that when DIG Bashir Memon gave a statement in the Supreme Court against Beater, he was transferred the next morning allegedly at Beater's behest.

However, following the appointment of former AIG Shahid Hayat, Beater fled the country and moved his gambling business from Ghas Mandi to other parts of the city.
