Tapping potential: Project aiming to curb youth illiteracy to be initiated

Project aims to make 280,000 people literate.

Literacy and Non-formal Basic Education Secretary Pervez Ahmed Khan said on Tuesday that it was initiating a project titled Education for All to curb illiteracy across the age spectrum with the cooperation of the youth.


Khan said the project would cost Rs750 million and would run with the cooperation of non-governmental organisations, institute-based youth and community groups. He said the project was being initiated to tap the potential of youth-based civic and social groups. Khan said the project was being initiated in accordance with the Punjab Youth Policy of 2012.  He said that according to the policy, the youth were to be provided with opportunities and avenues to engage with various sectors of society positively. Khan said youth groups would be formed in this regard. He said the project aimed to reduce illiteracy and channel the energy of the youth positively. Khan said the project would also provide job opportunities for those interested in reducing illiteracy.


He said the Budget and Planning Department had approved funds for the project. Khan said 14,000 adult literacy centres would be set-up in 10 districts across the Punjab under the project. He said the project will render 280,000 people literate. Khan said the initiative would help by the government by making uneducated youth literate. He said it would also channel the energy of the youth in a befitting manner. Khan said this was essential for Pakistan to progress.
