Exchange of fire: Old enmity claims six lives, leaves three injured

Armed men raided and opened fire on the residents of three villages near Khairpur Bypass.

Six persons were killed while three others were wounded when a group of armed men raided and opened fire on three villages of the Junejo tribe near Khairpur Bypass situated within the limits of the C section police station on Tuesday night.


A group of more than 20 people armed with automatic weapons raided the Muhammad Sharif Junejo, Wadero Bhooral Khan Junejo and Natho Khan Junejo villages and opened indiscriminate fire. A shoot-out ensued as the villagers returned the fire. As a result, four persons, including, three villagers named Ali Gohar Junejo, Panjal Junejo and Zafar Ali Junejo, and one of the assailants Abdul Jabbar Lashari were killed on the spot. Khair Muhammad Junejo, Nazir Ahmed Junejo, Abdul Rasheed Junejo, Muhammad Rafiq Junejo and Momin Ali Junejo were injured. The assailants fled from the scene while firing aerial shots.

The police took the bodies and injured to Civil Hospital, Khairpur, where Khair Muhammad and Nazir Ahmed succumbed to their injuries. The bodies were handed over to the relatives after autopsy.

Aftermath

Villagers blocked the highway near the Khairpur bypass along with the bodies in protest of the incident. Khairpur SSP Usman Ghani Siddiqui reached the spot, negotiated and assured the protestors of the early arrest of the culprits. Upon his assurance, the villagers ended the blockade.

According to the SSP, the police have found a national identification card from the pocket of a deceased assailant, who belongs to Pir Jo Goth.

The affected villagers were residents of the Kingri taluka and had moved near the Khairpur Bypass due to continuous clashes between Kalhoro and Junejo clansmen. The police are further probing the matter. However, no case was registered till the filing of this report.
