Electoral reforms committee meeting cancelled

National Assembly Secretariat cancels meeting without citing any reasons

ISLAMABAD:
A meeting of the parliamentary committee on electoral reforms scheduled for Monday has been cancelled.

The 33-member committee headed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar was due to meet at 2:30pm today but was cancelled by the National Assembly Secretariat without citing any reasons.

The special committee comprises members from all major parties represented in Parliament to reform the country’s electoral system.

The committee was constituted by National Assembly speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on the request of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after opposition parties mounted pressure on him to probe alleged rigging in last year’s general elections.
While the committee is tasked to formulate a set of recommendations within three months, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has not attended the last few sessions.
