Sindhi nationalist parties have put their weight behind the elected government of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz, warning of resistance against an undemocratic overthrow.
The Sindh Taraqi Pasand (STP) party announced its support for the democratic institutions after a meeting of the STP's central leadership on Sunday. "Those powers that are acting behind the sit-ins in Islamabad don't want democracy to strengthen in this country," said the party's chairperson, Dr Qadir Magsi, in a policy statement issued after the meeting.
Magsi also rejected the demands of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf and Pakistan Awami Tehreek for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to step down. "Nawaz Sharif should not resign. If he does so, it will be the defeat of all forces that stand for democracy."
Advocate Ayaz Palijo, president of Qaumi Awami Tehreek, warned that his party will strongly oppose any undemocratic move.
