Side-stepping political martyrs: ‘Opposition has no interest in forming govt’

Members say vote of no-confidence only to stop Khattak from dissolving K-P Assembly.

PESHAWAR:
Although the opposition in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly has submitted a vote of no-confidence against Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, it has no interest in forming its own government, The Express Tribune was told.

“We will not let them (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) become political martyrs,” said an opposition party member, requesting anonymity. “Their boat is already sinking.”

He said the requisition for a vote of no-confidence was submitted to stop Khattak from dissolving the assembly, adding they would not form their own government and allow the PTI-led coalition to continue. On August 19, opposition benches submitted a vote of no-confidence against Khattak in the provincial assembly secretariat.

Another opposition member said PTI was already divided as some of its members are disgruntled with the presence of corrupt elements in the provincial government. He pointed out the party already sent two of its cabinet members packing due to their poor performance.

“It clearly means their cabinet is not delivering. These are not the first cases and you will see many others in the future,” the lawmaker said. “A small push would make PTI crumble.”

Ready to take over?

However, Awami National Party (ANP) parliamentary leader Sardar Hussain Babak told the media his party is not concerned with PTI legislators’ resignations. He said the opposition parties would sit together and form a new government in the province if need be.

On the other hand, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz members remained against both the vote of no-confidence and the formation of a new government in K-P. Similarly, PTI members, although disgruntled, said they would not support it either.

Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan (AJIP) chief, Shahram Khan Tarakai said his party members were present at the Azadi march, which clearly demonstrated their support for Khattak. He said they would never let the CM down. “We will support the PTI-led provincial government at all costs,” Tarakai asserted.
