PTI and PAT sit-ins: ‘Poison’ in water actually chlorine

PIMS doctor says chemical taste is result of water purification process

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has made special arrangements with the support of Health Directorate of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to ensure supply of clean water to sit-ins participants of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).

PIMS spokesperson Dr Wasim Khawaja said that chlorination of water was being implemented to save people from typhoid, cholera, hepatitis, diarrhoea, flu, and other viral diseases.

He denied Dr Tahirul Qadri’s claim that there was “poison” in the water, explaining that chlorine had a bitter taste and reiterating that chlorination was necessary for disease prevention.

Dr Khawaja said Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University Vice-Chancellor Dr Javed Akram met with CDA Health Directorate officials regarding water purification for sit-in participants.

He also said medical fumigation was not suitable for areas with large crowds as it could cause allergic and asthmatic reactions. Dr Khawaja added that senior doctors were on call to provide medical cover to protesters.
