Resolution: Lawyers oppose any move to derail democracy

Want constitution to be respected by all quarters.

ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad District Bar Association on Saturday passed a unanimous resolution against any move from any quarter that could derail democracy.

The resolution said that the bar condemned any attempt or protest that may ultimately derail democracy. “The bar will not allow anyone to take such unconstitutional steps.”

Talking to The Express Tribune, Advocate Ashraf Gujjar said that the constitution of Pakistan entitled every citizen to stage peaceful protests, but this does not mean that the constitution and democracy should be threatened.

He said the legal fraternity was united for the supremacy of the constitution, independence of judiciary and the continuation of democracy.

He said the supremacy of the constitution and strengthening of democracy stood above any other considerations.

“We will not allow anyone to act against the constitution or derail the democratic system for which people have rendered countless sacrifices.”

He said the legal fraternity across the country was observing the situation and will react strongly if any unconstitutional act was committed.

He said that the lawyers will not sit silent if anyone tried to attack democracy or the constitution. “We will not hesitate to render sacrifices as we have previously done.”
