KARACHI:

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has taken up the task of registering non-natives residing and/or working in Karachi with their biometrical information system.

NADRA had integrated biometric records of around 70,000 aliens into its system till August 21 while scanning of National Alien Registration Authority (Nara) record is also in progress, said NADRA chairperson Muhammad Imtiaz Tajwar in a statement issued on Saturday.

NADRA is taking all possible measures to ensure the registration of aliens and all required support and resources are being provided for the purpose on priority basis, he said. Scattered records of 70,000 aliens held by Nara has been properly categorised and arranged to enhance efficiency. Furthermore, biometric registration of ex-Nara employees is being completed by NADRA for digital authentication.

According to Tajwar, NADRA has allocated its resources to complete the task without wasting any time. Mobile registration vans (MRVs) are working at Karachi Fisheries to ensure biometric registration of non-Pakistani crews. Similarly, NADRA is coordinating with the different madressas of Karachi to ensure the registration of foreign students. Recently, 342 aliens were registered with their biometric information system and they will soon have their computerised cards issued, said the chairperson. Likewise, zonal offices in Karachi have manually registered an estimated 2,500 aliens.

NADRA director-general, Sindh, Brig (retd) Zahid Hussain added that a coordination meeting was held with SITE managing director (MD) for the registration of aliens working in different industrial establishments in Sindh. A joint meeting of NADRA, SITE MD and SITE Association will be held soon to work out the procedure.

The MRVs have been provided at different locations for the registration of aliens. These locations include seminaries, fish harbour and industrial areas in Karachi. In collaboration with the Karachi Fish Harbour Authority, an office will be established with modern infrastructure to help register non-native fishermen.

Hussain added that coordination also has been sought with Sindh home secretary and the Karachi commissioner on different issues, such as entry and exit check posts of Karachi.
