Crime and telecommunications: Jammers to be installed in prisons

The spokesman said PCOs would be installed in prisons however, to ensure that inmates could reach their dear ones.

FAISALABAD:
Prisons Department on Thursday decided to install jammers in its facilities across Pakistan to disconnect cellular phone services in jails. A spokesman for the department said some wealthy inmates had been using mobile phones after bribing wardens. He said prison authorities had confiscated several mobile phones from prisoners during a search. The spokesman said the department had decided to install jammers in jails across Pakistan after the operation. He said several notorious criminals including terrorists had access to mobile phones in prisons across the country including Faisalabad Central Jail. The spokesman said they could have caused an untoward incident by contacting sympathisers. He said the installation of jammers in prisons would render cellular services inoperative there. The spokesman said PCOs would be installed in prisons however, to ensure that inmates could reach their dear ones. He said PCOs had been set up in Faisalabad District Jail and Faisalabad Central Jail but these would be made operational after jammers had been installed in the prisons.
