‘Fisherfolk don’t want Cantt control’

Scores of fishermen took to the streets and staged a sit-in in front of the Karachi Cantonment Board office to protest against the government’s decision to allow the cantonment board to take over their villages.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Sindhi Mahgeer Ittehad President Haji Younus said many villages including Younusabad, Kaka Pir and Shams Pir have been the homes of fisherfolk for centuries but now the cantonment board wants to take them over and impose high taxes.


The fisherfolk protest rally began from Kaka Pir, Mauripur and gathered at the Karachi Press Club where they were joined by fishermen from Rehri goth, Ibrahim Hyderi and Gizri.

Men, women and children shouted slogans against the board, held up placards and demanded the government withdraw its decision. Haji Younus said they wanted to remain under control of the City District Government, Karachi and would not accept the board’s decision.

Haji Shafi Jamot, former director of the Fishermen Cooperative Society, and Saleh Mohammed, Katchi Ittehad president also participated in the rally.
