FAISALABAD:

Nearly four dozen residents of Gujjar Basti on Sunday staged a protest demonstration against the Gulberg police for what they called was a wrongful arrest.

The demonstrators gathered at Faisalabad-Narwala Road and blocked it for traffic.

Aftab Saqi, one of the protestors, told newsmen that a Gulberg police team had arrested 18-year-old Sabir Rafique on Saturday night on charges of trafficking drugs.

He said most people of the area knew Rafique and could vouch that he was not a drug dealer.

He said that the Gulberg police were demanding a bribe from Rafique for his release.

On being informed, a police team headed by the Gulberg station house officer reached the scene and negotiated with the protestors.

He told them that Rafique would be released if he was found innocent.

He said action would be taken against those responsible for wrongfully arresting him if he was found innocent.

Talking to newsmen, the station house officer said that Sabir Rafique had been arrested when he was caught selling drugs in Gujjar Basti.

He said his relatives had staged a protest demonstration to pressurise the police into letting him go.
