Shaharyar Khan emerges as strong candidate for PCB chairman
The former PCB chairman named as special nominee in governing board alongside Sethi
KARACHI:
Former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan is likely to come back in power after being named in the new governing board along with outgoing chairman Najam Sethi.
Khan has replaced one of the two special nominees Iqbal Umar.
The government issued a notification on Monday dissolving the Management Committee (MC) of the PCB and replacing it with the governing board. The governing board will constitute a chairman, four members of regions and departments and special nominees.
“Two members nominated by the patron in his discretion are Najam Sethi and ambassador Shaharyar Khan,” said the notification.
With Sethi declaring he would not contest the new elections, Khan emerges as a strong candidate for the position of PCB chairman with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s backing.
The government also nominated Justice (retd) Sair Ali as the new chief election commissioner with immediate effect as per the requirements laid down in part four of the constitution. Ali will work as the caretaker chairman until the elections are held.
“As per article 7 (2) of the new PCB constitution, the election commissioner shall take over as acting PCB chairman and shall ensure the conduct of elections within 30 days from the date of assumption of office,” the notification read.
