Woman drowns three children and herself

The official said the family could not provide for their three daughters and one son.

NOWSHERA:
Poverty and desperation drove a woman to commit suicide and also take the lives of her three daughters on Friday.

A Nowshera Kalan police official said Shabana, a resident of Pir Sabaq, was living in miserable conditions with her husband Noor Habib, who was a rickshaw driver.

The official said the family could not provide for their three daughters and one son.

He said on Friday, Shabana tied Madina, 12, Mutahira, 6 and Saira, 2, and Hassan, 8, to her body with a rope and jumped into the Kabul River.

Hassan managed to break free and escape alive, while the other four drowned.

He said severe poverty drove his mother to commit such an act and added his parents fought regularly. A search for the bodies is under way.
